Biography
Born in Sydney, Australia into a musical family, Wright was drawn to the piano at age five and later picked up the guitar at the age of nine. Finding inspiration in a variety of music, his early influences ranged from Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, to Stevie Wonder and George Benson.
"My journey in audio began with a deep obsession with music and the electric guitar. I lived in a small town near the Blue Mountains, but growing up still had the opportunity to see Tommy Emmanuel, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, ELO, B.B King, AC/DC, and Deep Purple live in concert. These moments of sonic inspiration at a young age fueled my passion and remain vividly in my mind to this day.
I became a human sponge, absorbing everything I could and practiced the guitar up to 10 hours a day. I would compose my own music and record everything on an analogue 4-track tape recorder up until the digital revolution. The evolution to computer-based recording created fresh opportunities in synthesis, MIDI programming, and audio engineering.
In the years I've been a session musician, I continued studies in composition, arranging, orchestration, game audio & sound design. Stravinsky, Lutoslawski, Ravel, Debussy, Ralph Vaughan-Williams and Aaron Copland became major influences, as well as film composers Bernard Herrmann, Howard Shore, Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams. Sound designers Randy Thom, Ben Burtt, Gary Rydstrom, Walter Murch, Chris Watson & Gordon Hempton are constant sources of inspiration. Beyond the world of sound and music, I also find inspiration in the sciences, literature, philosophy, psychology and nature.
In both linear and interactive media, immersive and engaging stories are born when sound design and music work together. The media audio landscape would be better off if more sound designers thought like musicians, and musicians like sound designers. I am passionate about approaching my projects from both perspectives, which allows me to sculpt the sound and score together into a unified soundscape, the two elements interacting in a “dance” which better serves the story. It also allows me to explore the fascinating ambiguities in the space between sound and music.”
